How To Choose The Right Diamond Wedding Ring

Everyone wants to know how to choose the right diamond wedding ring. I'm learning more about diamonds and thought I would share the tips...

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!

There are 4 C's in jewelry...

CARAT:  A carat is the standard unit of measurement used to weigh diamond and gemstones. One carat (1.00 ct) equals 200 milligrams, or 0.200 grams. You may also have heard jewelers talking about "points". In common jewelry parlance, when referring to a diamond weighing less than one carat, jewelers use points, just like pennies are used for prices lower than one dollar. A point equals 0.01 ct. So, for example, a 15 point diamond is the same as a 0.15 ct diamond.

As large diamonds are rare, they have a greater value per carat and the price of diamonds rises exponentially in relation to size. Accordingly, a one carat diamond with a certain color and clarity will be much more valuable than two separate half carat diamonds of the same quality. Due to higher demand, diamonds increase in value after they reach the half and full carat mark.

CLARITY: A diamond's clarity rating is based on the presence and visibility of internal flaws (called inclusions) and external flaws (called blemishes). Inclusions are naturally occurring impurities that can become embedded in a diamond during its formation. Blemishes can occur during cutting, polishing and wearing. It is a common misconception that a half-carat diamond is half the size of a one-carat diamond. While a half-carat diamond is half the weight of a one-carat diamond, the size difference in Round stones is only 1.35mm. The average measurements for a half-carat diamond and a one-carat stone are 5.00mm and 6.35mm, respectively.

Clarity improves when a diamond has fewer flaws. A clarity grade is assigned based on the overall appearance of a diamond under 10x magnification.

Diamond clarity is graded according to the following scale:

FL
IF
VVS1-VVS2
VS1-VS2
SI1-SI2-SI3
I1-I2-I3

COLOR: Diamonds generally increase in value as their color moves from pale yellow to an absence of color that promotes more reflection and dispersal of light. Even the slightest tinge of yellow or brown in a white diamond will decrease its value. White diamonds are graded on a scale that uses the letters of the alphabet to describe color ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

"Everyone knows that the biggest day of your life starts with the question ‘Will you marry me?’ And because 99.9% of women say yes when asked with a ring and not a lollipop we’re here to help you create the one thing that will take you from single to engaged! Everyone also knows that long before the actual wedding day frantic planning takes over and a million decisions will be made. Keep in mind that cake will be eaten, flowers will be tossed but your wedding rings will be constant reminders of the best day of your life. Make sure this symbol of your relationship looks the way you want it to. We’ve helped hundreds of couples start their happily ever after by popping that big question with a ring. And we’re still working on the .1% saying yes to lollipops." Saratoga Jewelery Co.

4 Surprising Facts About Diamonds

I bet that many of you have a beautiful diamond on your left hand?!

Here are 4 surprising facts about diamonds:

1. A Diamond is a mineral made of carbon. It is the only gem that is made of a single element. All the rest are combinations of 2 or more. Laboratory analysis has shown that gem quality diamonds are made up of more than 99.95% pure carbon.

2. Diamond's crystal structure is isometric; the atoms in isometric crystals have essentially the same arrangement in all directions. The chemical composition and the Crystal structure are what makes diamonds and other minerals what they are. It produces the optical and physical properties that make diamonds durable, beautiful, and ultimately, valuable.

3. Diamonds form typically between 75 and 120 miles below the Earth's surface, underneath the huge rock plates of the continents. These are the only places the necessary temperature and pressure conditions exist. During the Earth's history, diamonds were delivered to the surface by a special kind of volcanic eruption. Geologists estimate the first delivery came more than 2.5 billion years ago, the most recent that we are aware of about 45 million years ago.

4. Diamonds are mined all over the Earth. They are then graded, cut, then graded again and delivered all over the world for consumer consumption. They are mounted in many stunning jewelry pieces and worn as symbols of love and relationships.
